In the form of Snow Drifts and No Place Like Home the fairytales as we know them were turned upside down and inside out – and not only are the traditional fairytales ‘tweaked’ but the established ONCE storylines that we have started to accept as the official real-life truth (yes... you know you have started to question the classics too…) are scattered with the introduction of time travel. An episode like never before – if you haven’t watched Once Upon a Time yet, I would strongly suggest you start before Season Four arrives. Or else you’ll be left in the dark… and the cold.

Or else you’ll be left in the dark… and the cold. by Julia Lawson Keeping a supply of anti-evil defences on standby, for example a wooden stake, garlic, a pail of water, seems an increasingly good idea. The Wicked Witch of the West has managed to gather all the ingredients she needs for her time travel spell: a heart, courage, a brain and is just waiting for Snow White’s second baby… But why these ingredients in particular you ask? Well… by Julia Lawson In your fairytale palace, surrounded by friends and family, is it wrong to think you are completely safe from green witches on broomsticks? Yes, it would appear it is. A Curious Thing opens with Sleeping Beauty and Prince Philip being turned into flying simians and the Wicked Witch making a claim on Snow White’s baby. So much for happy endings… by Julia Lawson It all started with an apple. To rid her kingdom of Snow White, the Queen turned to her fruit bowl for a solution. However, is there any significance behind her choice of colour? Why choose Red Delicious over Granny Smith and Pink Lady? The answer highlights the differences between the Wicked Witch and the Evil Queen – two sisters who cannot agree to disagree on their taste in apples. This week’s episode is very juicy… by Julia Lawson The Wicked Witch has Storybrooke right where she wants it – at the centre of her big green plot. Yet also slap bang in the centre of the plot for this episode is Captain Hook and his band of pirates. What happened in the missing year? What has Hook neglected to share with the class? There be a storm on the horizon Mr Smee… by Julia Lawson The shock departure last week has left everyone reeling and a big question hanging in the air: What does the Wicked Witch want? The mystery begins to unravel in a flashback to the past where it all began, as a green swirling cyclone deposits a baby in front on a travelling couple en route to Oz. Bright lights, green city… let’s get this show on the yellow brick road. by Julia Lawson Oh what a finale. As Once Wonderland bids us farewell after just one season, all the stories conclude with a satisfying mixture of wonder and action. Although this show will be missed by many, it expanded the OUAT universe and explored the world introduced by OUAT through Queen Cora and the Hatter. But how did this adventure end? Well, with the ‘unbreakable’ laws of magic being broken, a Magic Well guardian, genie bottles flying left, right and centre, and a flying carpet ride. That’s how. But let’s elaborate… by Julia Lawson Since OUAT returned three episodes ago we have been left with a flurry of important questions about two key characters: where is Gold? How is he alive? On that topic, where is Neal? Is he in Storybrooke? Is he a flying monkey? A few weeks ago, the majority of people would give you a pitying look and suggest you check your sugar intake had flying monkeys arisen in conversation. But since OUAT took that Oz-related tumble into madness anything is possible and the suspense keeps on building. Tally ho! (And fetch the tissues…) by Julia Lawson With each episode of Once Upon a Time we learn a new lesson in how to better ourselves, with fairytale examples using more magic and intrigue than we’d come across in our day to day routine. ‘The Tower’ acts as a platform to explore how we present fear to ourselves and others… although it is a relief that in our real world a fear of responsibility doesn’t produce a ‘Dementor-esque’ stalker. And for the most part we don’t spend a large part of our ‘routine’ stumbling round the Enchanted Forrest hunting for magical hallucinogenic roots… by Julia Lawson Regrets and consequences are the theme of this week’s episode, examining things lost and hearts broken. Anastasia gave up Will for her crown, but now wants him back… unfortunate. Cyrus gave up his ‘lost and found’ compass to the caterpillar years ago, yet needs it to find his mother who is still alive encased in Jafar’s staff. But Wonderland is all about finding things… |
